Sony has one of the best gaming consoles lines, the PlayStation. It is one of the best around, and their latest next-gen console is just months away from launching. The new console is expected to make its grand entrance during Holiday 2020.
The giant has promised to unveil one of the best, biggest and powerful consoles it has ever made. With the specs of this next-gen console, Sony has announced that it intends to revolutionize the gaming experience.
The PS5 is the next big console for Sony, and different fans across the world are asking themselves; will PS5 play PS3 games? One of the prominent features that will be available with the next-gen console is the backward compatibility. Will technology only cover PS4 games? Will the PS5 play PS3 games?
Well, let’s find out.
The gaming industry as a whole is gearing up for the launch of the new next-gen consoles, the Xbox Series X and the PS5. We don’t know a lot about the PS5 since Sony has decided to go with a steady but slow approach when it comes to sharing information concerning their next-gen console. There is still a lot we don’t know yet about the PS5.
This concept of sharing information has left a majority of fans with lots of questions about this new console as far as its features are concerned. One of the issues that standouts are the question of backward compatibility since the majority of gamers are looking forward to carrying over any games that they own.
Sony has commented on the forward compatibility feature, just briefly leaving a lot of information unturned. Due to that, many are still wondering whether PS5 will play PS3 games.
PS5 and Backward Compatibility
PlayStation fans have invested a lot in games as far as time and resources are concerned. Due to that, an upgrade can seem to be very costly, and that why there’s the need for backward compatibility. One debate that has been around for some time is whether the next-gen consoles, the Xbox Series X and the PS5, will support play for the old-gen games.
Microsoft has confirmed that the new Xbox Series X will support all the titles of the past consoles. The ball is on Sony’s court now, will the PS5 support all the titles for the old-gen consoles?
According to Sony, the next-gen console will be backward compatible to some extent. However, fans and gamers should not hold their breaths for the older generations.
According to an article that was published in the PlayStation Blog, the new PS5 console will be compatible with a lot of PS4 games. According to Sony’s statement, a majority of the over four thousand titles that are available for PS4 will play on the PS5.
The blog, however, didn’t mention anything past the PS4 generation, and more so, according to the blog, not every PS4 game will play in the new console. The PS4 was not backward compatible, and it is more likely that the new PS5 won’t be able to play PS3 titles in any way.
Come to think about it, Sony is approaching the different PS4 titles one case after the other as far as the backward compatibility is concerned, and that’s an enormous undertaking. If they were to add PS3 on that list, that would be a massive project, and I don’t think they have the time for that at the moment.
PS5 will be backward compatible but to a few game selections. It will only feature PS4 games, and that means that PS3, PS2, and PS3 titles will miss out. In the recent tech drive for the PS5, Sony revealed that they aim to make some of the PS4’s top 100 games available for the next console at launch. With time, 4000+ PS4 titles will be available to play in the new system. This will also include PS4’s VR games.
According to the PS5 lead system architect, Mark Cerny, the new console will be compatible with the last generation’s PS4 library. The new console will have one of the best libraries of games. Apart from that, Sony has assured fans that they will be able to enjoy higher resolutions and more stable frame rates when it comes to the backward compatible titles.
What we should hope for as PlayStation fans are for an improved system for PS Now or a new way to distribute the majority of PS3 titles digitally.
Will PS5 Be Compatible with PS3, PS2, and PS1?
As highlighted earlier, despite Sony clarifying to support the whole PS4 library, they have not clarified whether the backward compatibility will also apply for the old generation titles. That has caused different rumors to circulate the internet.
For instance, a rumor has been circulating that Sony is working on remastering the PS5 system. The new development will allow the PS5 to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles as well, just like in the case of the PS4. According to the rumor, they will improve these older titles through improved frames rates and 4K upscaling.
The credibility of the rumor is questionable since no official communication from Sony has been made concerning the same. For now, those are just speculations.
If finally, for sure, the PS5 will be backward compatible for all the old-gen consoles in the console lineup, then PS5 is a must-buy for any PlayStation fan out there. The console will not only be a must-buy, but it will also beat Microsoft’s next-gen console, the Xbox Series X.
If the PS5 is not going to be compatible with the PS3, PS2, and PS1, not all will be lost. There are different games available in PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now or maybe purchasing them on the PSN Store. You can also find some of the classics that have been mastered in the current-gen consoles. Some of these classics include Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
So, will ps5 play ps3 games? We will have to find it in a few months.
